Brussels, 22/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - Although European Parliament rapporteur Alexander Alvaro (German Liberal) welcomed the European Commission's proposal presented on Wednesday for adopting a directive by co-decision on the retention of telecoms data, notably for fighting terrorism an crime, Sylvia-Yvonne Kaufmann (GUE/NGL, Germany) opposed the position of Commissioner Frattini on this delicate affair (EUROPE 9032). In a press release, the PDS MEP said that it was inadmissible that all Europeans are automatically considered suspect. She also said that neither the Commissioner nor Council had been able to prove that retention of a “gigantic amount of data” as they were proposing, would really help fight terrorism or crime effectively. Kaufmann considers that Parliament was right to reject the initial proposal of the framework decision presented by France, United Kingdom and Sweden.
