Brussels, 22/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - Public transport security experts from the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) are participating in a Study Tour in the United States from 18 to 23 September in three towns (Boston, Washington and New York City). The aim of the visit is to share local expertise of security initiatives to improve the security of infrastructures and passengers on public transport. The first visit, to Boston on 19 September, focused on prevention measures, presented by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), the authority in charge of public transport in that town. Such measures include: security inspection programme, anti-terrorism training for police employees, partnerships with state and local police agencies, “see something, say something” awareness campaigns, and increased patrols based on threat levels, etc. The question of prevention will be looked at further in Washington, and the visit to New York City will focus on “back to business” solutions. EUROPE will come back to this in a later issue.
