Brussels, 22/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - The vice presidents of the Socialist group at the European Parliament Jan Marinus Wiersma and Hannes Swoboda have called on the Vatican to fully cooperate with the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY). This is in response to information from the Chief Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte according to which Croat General Gotovina, accused of war crimes, is hiding in a Franciscan monastery in Croatia. According to Del Ponte, the Vatican could very easily locate Ante Gotovina but when she asked for its help, it refused. In a press statement Swoboda underlined that if the Vatican helped the Croatian authorities to take Gotovina to the Tribunal in The Hague, it would “unblock the start of Croatia's EU accession negotiations”.
