21/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - On the eve of the Colombian vice president Francisco Santos' visit to the European Parliament on 22 September, Amnesty International has sounded a warning. In a press statement, Amnesty warned that Mr Santos would be campaigning among MEPs for EU financial support for the government plan to demobilise Colombian paramilitaries. In its recent report on “The Paramilitaries in Medellin: Demobilisation or Legalisation?”, the human rights organisation illustrates that the controversial Colombian government plan did not guarantee the demobilisation of the paramilitary groups but facilitated, on the contrary, “the 'recycling' of illegal combatants…thus reinforcing the endemic problem of impunity in Colombia”. Amnesty is therefore calling on the EU to not reach any hasty decisions on the matter.
