Brussels, 21/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - During its seminar on the European social model and financial perspectives for 2007-13 on Tuesday in Hélécine, the Commission renewed its support for increased European research funding. In the follow up on Wednesday it also approved 7 specific programmes (4 for the main chapters of the RDFP - “cooperation” covering the nine thematic “ideas” with the European Research Council, “personnel” for researchers and “capacities” for infrastructures and 3, which cover the functioning of the Common Research Centre and nuclear activities covered by the Euratom treaty) which have just outlined the contents for the 7th Research and Development Framework Programme. On 6 April the Commission proposed increasing funding on research to EUR 70 billion but Member States were reticent at negotiations on financial perspectives. These specific programmes focus above all on: how the new lending facility works, which will be implemented wit the support of the EIB; the organisation of future the European Research Council, which is supported by an independent Scientific Council which adopted a work programme implemented by an executive agency. This model is expected to guarantee scientific autonomy while ensuring the effective functioning and good financial management of this new structure. It is supposed to be getting a little over EUR 1 billion a year for funding its fundamental research at the cutting edge of research. The next stage will involve simplification of procedures and the adoption of participation rules toward the second half of October.
