Brussels, 21/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - On 20 September the European Commission adopted a proposal extending the derogation on the presence of malic acid in Argentinean wines imported into the EU until the end of 2006. This oenological practice, banned in the EU, is used for correcting acidity. The Commission is prepared to grant this concession to the country until the end of ongoing negotiations between the EU and Mercosur (which Argentina is part of) which aim to conclude an agreement on the wine trade. These negotiations focus on respective oenological practices of the two parties as well as on the protection of geographical indications. According to the Commission, this agreement between the EU and Mercosur should allow Argentina to use this practice (the use of malic acid) permanently.
