Appeal for recognition of Iranian opposition

Brussels, 30/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - The study day organised by the Green/EFA at the European Parliament on the situation in Iran after the elections, was planned before the victory of Mahmood Ahmadinejad. This provided the occasion for certain speakers to call for the EU to enact some concrete action. Karim Lahidji, vice president of the International Federation for Human Rights, forcefully underlined the fact that the Iranian opposition “was not calling for arms or money but rather, intellectual and political recognition”. Lahidji has been in exile in France for more than 20 years and was commenting on the most recent position taken by the CFSP High Representative, Javier Solana, who had called for Ahmadinejad's words to be translated into deeds. Lahidji, said that dialogue between the EU and the new Iranian president had to focus on precise objectives and give freedom to dissidents and end attacks on freedom of the press. Angelika Beer (German Green) affirmed that it was impossible to negotiate on human rights for which respect for human rights was a preliminary for any dialogue on nuclear issues.
