Pöttering's open letter to presidents of three European institutions

Brussels, 30/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - The president of the EPP-ED group at the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pöttering, has written an open letter to the presidents of the EP, Commission and European Council (and to Jean-Claude Juncker and Tony Blair), calling on them to response to the current EU crisis “by asserting some fundamental positions and by making important policy changes”. On enlargement, Pöttering calls for a “period of reflection' and asks whether the EU can “continue its accelerated enlargement policy without a further strengthening of its own structures?” In the context of the legislative programme, he calls for the 600 proposals being prepared to be re-examined so that they are only adopted if they improve competitiveness and if they are really necessary. He also calls for the question of the 200-13 budget to be swiftly resolved on the basis of “”parliament's fair proposals”.
