Modification of fishing possibilities in 2005

Brussels, 31/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Monday the Council of the EU adopted without debate a regulation amending fishing possibilities in 2005 (EUROPE 8932 on the Commission's position). This regulation of a technical character mainly intends to correct mistakes, notably on the number of fishing days for cod in the North Sea. The main provisions are: the number of fishing days each month by boats operating in the North Sea with square meshed window trawling nets is set at 9 (instead of 12 as written erroneously in the regulation graph), in an effort to facilitate the reconstitution cod stocks; the EU in 2005 will have access to snow crab stocks in Greenland waters (1,000 tonnes: 875 for Spain, 125 for Ireland; for deep-sea waters, the quota for Black Scabbard fish in the waters off the Azores is 700 tonnes, an increase of 120 tonnes (as opposed to the initial 14) for deep sea sharks (accidental catches). No fishing rights for deep-sea sharks have been granted
