Commission against milk sector export discounts

Brussels, 31/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is not in favour of adopting measures for adopting milk market support measures. At the Agriculture-Fisheries Council on 30 May, Ireland mentioned the difficulties dairy markets are currently experiencing. This Member State, supported by the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Austria, Hungary, Lithuania and Poland consider that export discounts are needed to enable the industry consolidate its market share at a time of falling institutional milk prices, which are expected to fall even further (in compliance with the decision of June 2003 on reform of the Common Agricultural Policy). European Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel, came out against the adoption of milk market support measures, believing that price reductions did not have a negative effect, milk powder and butter markets were not doing too badly and implementation of the reform has been quite successful.
