Brussels, 24/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - During Monday's General Affairs Council lunch, Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Moratinos briefly spoke of the precarious situation of the Constitution ratification process “but the Council did not discuss this matter today”, Council President Jean Asselborn told the press on Monday evening. “May 29th will be a very important day for France and for Europe. Many people involved in the building of Europe have taken up the issue in France to encourage the French to vote and to vote in favour of Europe. We have done our work - it is now up to the French to decide”, he commented. The Luxembourg Presidency does not have a “plan B” as it is “convinced that 52, 53 or 54% of the French will vote yes”. Nonetheless, if the no-vote wins, that result must be respected, but that does not mean the ratification process must stop there. “The Presidency has no intention of stopping the process of ratification on Sunday evening”, even if the French say no, and it will continue to “encourage” ratification in the other Member States, Asselborn was keen to point out.
