THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/ep/constitution/netherlands

24/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - On 23 May, the “Beter Europa” Foundation launched with the European Student Association, AEGEE, a campaign for the yes-vote at the Dutch referendum on 1 June on the European Constitution. The members of the “yes” campaign will, until 27 May, hand out flyers on the streets and hand over to a series of Dutch city mayors a message that is like a visiting card and which gives a synthesis of the reasons why the Netherlands should say “yes” to the Constitution. Above all, the former Dutch MEPs Michiel van Hulten (Socialist) and Louise van der Laan (Liberal) will present “pledge cards” to the mayors of Middelburg and Rotterdam. On 27 May, the action will end with a demonstration at the University of The Hague to be attended by the president of the ALDE Group at the European Parliament, Graham Watson, and MEP Kathalijne Buitenweg (Dutch Green member), as well as the former Dutch Foreign Ministers Hans van Mierlo and Hans van den Broek (also former European Commissioner).
