Brussels, 24/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - On 25 May at 3pm the European Parliament, meeting for a plenary session in Brussels, is to discuss the motion of censure presented by 77 MEPs against José Manuel Barroso, by initiative of the UK Independence Party member Nigel Farage, co-president of the Independence and Democracy group, who attacked the European Commission President's links with the Greek ship builder Spiros Latsis, as he feels there could be conflicts of interest (see EUROPE 8946). Since the motion was presented, the presidents of the political groups EPP-ED, PES, ALDE and Greens/EFA have stated that the members of their groups, or 597 MEPs out of 732, are opposed to this initiative, which is “unjustified and out of all proportion” (EUROPE 8947). The vote is scheduled for the session to be held in Strasbourg on 6 and 7 June, but under these circumstances, it appears clear that the motion has no chance of winning the double majority needed to be adopted- simple majority of MEPs and majority of two-thirds of votes cast.
