26/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - The “External Relations” Council on Monday welcomed the continuing withdrawal of Syrian troops and security services from Lebanon, which is due to be completed by 30 April. In its conclusions, the Council voiced its hopes that the new Lebanese government led by Najib Miqati will be up to the task of organising “free, transparent and fair elections, free from all foreign interference or intervention and under local and international observation” within the time available. It also reiterated the EU's willingness to lend assistance for the Lebanese electoral process which, with the agreement of the Lebanese government, could include sending an election observation mission.
