Luxembourg presidency says cultural industries help European economy expand

Brussels, 26/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - The Luxembourg minister of the economy and external trade, Jeannot Krecké has underlined that the culture industry represents an important sector of the economy in Europe and accounts for 5% of GDP. At a colloquy on 20-21 April the minister referred to the cultural industry's challenges in the EU. He deplored the fact that almost 85% of films distributed in the world came from Hollywood and was concerned by the emergence of major international groups (with strong vertical integration) launched in the 1990s which control the creation, production and commercialisation of a product). Krecké explained that there were currently four majors controlling 80% of the world music market, “In theory, the big labels are nourished by the independents and the two are therefore complementary, in reality, monopolisation harms diversity of the work distributed”.
