26/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - China must play a more active role in trade liberalisation”, the former European Commissioner for Trade, who is now a candidate for the post of WTO Director General, Pascal Lamy, said on Sunday at the Economic Forum in Boao, southern China. Mr Lamy noted that it is not that China does not take part in negotiations, but that it takes part as a recent member and its tactical objective is to pay as little as possible. He went on to add that this is a question which must be discussed more with China. When it joined the WTO, China was given a number of advantages, particularly for textiles, but it has also had to pay the price when it comes to internal liberalisation. We recall that, until he withdrew from the race to head the WTO, China supported the Brazilian candidate, Luiz Felipe de Seixas Correa (EUROPE 8930).
