EP calls for end to extra-judicial executions

Strasbourg, 18/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - By adopting a resolution on Bangladesh last Thursday, the EP has voiced its condemnation of the series of bomb attacks and calls on the Bangladeshi government to ensure that international investigators assisting the Bangladeshi intelligence services have full access to any evidence on the attacks, in compliance with the commitments taken in this sense by the government itself. The EP is calling on the government to bring an end the “Rapid Response Battalion” paramilitary operations against organised crime, which has been carrying out extra-judicial executions (more than “40 death in ambushes” a month). It also underlines that the ODIKAR organisation, a reputable human rights organisation, has affirmed that in 2004 90 people died in detention after suffering from torture. Parliament is calling on the Council to review application of the clause on human rights and democracy in the cooperation agreement with Bangladesh and to ensure that the government agrees to make sufficient efforts to fundamentally improve the human rights situation.
