Commission strengthens Energy Star label for more efficient computer monitors

Brussels, 04/01/2005 (Agence Europe) - On 1 January 2005, stricter criteria for computer monitors to be granted the Energy Star label were introduced. Office equipment accounts for a steadily increasing share of energy consumption, not only in the office, but also at home. Thanks to the Energy Star labelling programme, consumers can make savings on their electricity bill while purchasing often better quality equipment. The Energy Star scheme will also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and control energy demand. Unlike the compulsory EU energy labelling system for domestic appliances, Energy Star labelling is voluntary. It was launched in 2001 and follows on from the SAVE Programme in the 1990s dedicated to promoting public awareness of energy efficiency and encouraging energy-saving behaviour.
