United States welcomes EU's decision to launch accession negotiations with Turkey

Brussels, 20/12/2004 (Agence Europe) - The United States has welcomed the European Council's decision last week to launch accession negotiations with Turkey on 3 October 2005. US Secretary of State Colin Powell said: 'We congratulate both the European Union and Turkey on this historic day. Today's positive decisions reflect Turkey's impressive reform accomplishments and are a great success for both Turkey and the European Union.'
