17/12/2004 (Agence Europe) - Edmund Stoiber, Minister-President of Bavaria and CSU leader, considers that the formula finally chosen by the European Council for EU membership talks with Turkey is a "great success for the CDU and the CSU". He said in a press release that the "essential objective, the fact that there is no automatic membership for Turkey" has been achieved. In his view, the fact that the conclusions of the European Council speak of open-ended talks is a failure for Chancellor Schröder "with his unilateral fixation" on Turkey's accession to the EU. Mr Stoiber announces that, when, in 2006, there is a change of government in Germany, the CDU and the CSU will "seek, with other European partners" to make negotiations result in "another kind of link" between the EU and Turkey. Despite the decision to open talks, "Schröder and Fischer have not managed to go against the proclaimed will of the large majority of people in our countries ", Mr Stoiber said, paying tribute to Chancellor Schüssel for having contributed to imposing the "decisive protective clause" which, in his view, is the reference for Turkey's capacity for absorption into the EU.
