Brussels, 25/11/2004 (Agence Europe) - As we announced earlier (EUROPE of 24 November, p.13), European Development Commissioner Louis Michel is on official visit to Sudan this week. On 27 November, he plans to visit the Kalma camp in Darfur. He will meet, among others, Jacob Kellenberger, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the African Union Ceasefire Commission. On 28 November, Mr Michel will hold meetings with the President of the Republic of Sudan, Mr Omer Hassan Al Bashir and several members of his government. Before his departure, Louis Michel announced in a press release that he wished to send out a clear message to the warring parties, "reminding them that no-one is exempt from the provisions of international humanitarian law". On 29 November, Mr Michel is to meet, in Nairobi, the presidents of Kenya, Mr Kibaki, of Somalia, Mr Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, and also General Sumbeyiwo, mediator in the North-South Sudan peace talks.
