Strasbourg, 22/11/2004 (Agence Europe) - Last Thursday six of the political groups at the European Parliament adopted a resolution. This resolution condemns all violations of human rights in Eritrea and calls for an independent and detailed enquiry into the incident of 4 September at the military prison on Adi Abeto where at least a dozen prisoners were killed. The EP is calling on the Eritrean authorities to immediately release the eleven former MPs, in keeping with the decision made by the African Commission of Human Rights last March. It also calls for the ban on an independent press to be removed immediately and for thirteen independent journalists to be released immediately, as well as those who were imprisoned for having exercised their freedom of expression. Parliament is calling for a commitment to be made to the consultation procedure, as laid down in Article 96 of the Cotonou Agreement, in an effort to bring an end to human rights violations and open the way to a multi-party system.
