London, 18/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - Francis Wurtz, President of the GUE/NGL Group at the European Parliament, confirmed that he was opposed to the European Constitution at a seminar organised in London on the occasion of the European Social Forum 2004. He said he comes from a country where it is possible for the "no" to prevail. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, he went on, Europe has been faced by a strong liberal push with the free movement of capital and the liberalisation of public services. In response, "we note a crisis of confidence between citizens and European institutions. Our group says 'no' to the Constitution and to the continuation for 30-50 years of the current liberal model", Mr Wurtz said. Speaking of the Charter of Fundamental Rights which is included in the Constitution, Francis Wurtz felt that some of its aspects ring true but the refusal to go to war is not to be found in it, the passage on equality between men and women is inadequate, the right to work is regression compared to labour law and, above all, the Charter does not create any new task for the European Union, he said. "You might as well paper your bedroom wall with it, for that's all it's good for", he concluded.
