Courtesy visit to discuss visa waivers

Brussels, 18/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - Officials from the United States and the ten EU Member States for which the US visa waiver system does not apply for short visits met up in Brussels on Monday, as decided at the Scheveningen Council during the visit by US Attorney General John Ashcroft (see Europe of 1 October). The United States is refusing to change its policy of examining each country on a case by case basis, hoping to tone down the aspirations of the new Member States, all of which (bar Slovenia) and Greece, whose citizens all require visas. 'While Greece and none of the new EU Member States meet all the criteria at this time (with the exception of Slovenia, which joined the VWP prior to EU accession), US officials said that they would continue to review the situation in each country and make nominations for participation in the VWP if and when a country becomes eligible', explained the US Mission to the EU in a press release.
