EU again calls for the security wall around Occupied Territories to be pulled down

Brussels, 09/07/2004 (Agence Europe) - As the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Friday was preparing to publish its ruling that the building of a security wall ('closure') by Israel on the West Bank contravenes international law, a spokesperson for the European Commission repeated the EU's calls for the wall to be pulled down. Jean-Christophe Filori said the EU has made it clear on numerous occasions that it was especially concerned at the planned location of the wall in the Occupied Territories, which contradicts international law. On the ICJ's ruling, he said the Commission would be studying it in detail and that beyond the legal aspects of the issue, the EU was concerned that the tracing of the 'green line' would make the two state solution (Israel and Palestine) physically impossible to implement. He said that this was why the EU continues to urge Israel to dismantle the line within the Occupied Palestinian Territories including East Jerusalem. In a press release issued late Friday afternoon, EU High Commissioner for CFSP, Javier Solana, said the wall could stymie in advance any future relations and form an obstacle to a fair solution to the conflict. Solana recalled the EU's commitment to the Quartet, adding that the conflict can only be resolved through negotiation between the parties.
