Brussels, 08/07/2004 (Agence Europe) - In their first assessment of the first two years of application of the agreement signed with the EU on the free circulation of individuals, the Swiss authorities comment that the agreement has proved positive for both sides. The agreement came into force on 1 June 2002 and has not posed any problems of note, comment the authorities. The Swiss federal immigration, integration and emigration office explains that there has been a strong demand for one-year residence and work permits, with the annual quota of 15000 permits running out after ten months in the first year, and eleven months in the second. Only half of the quota for residence of between 4 months and a year has been used up, however. Since 1 June, Swiss citizens have been able to reside without restriction in the EU, but EU citizens are subject to a quota system for Switzerland until 2007.
