Brussels, 06/07/2004 (Agence Europe) - Following the presidential elections in Indonesia, the Dutch presidency made the following declaration on behalf of the European Union, "The presidency of the European Union has followed the presidential in Indonesia with great interest. These elections constitute a crucial step in Indonesia's democratic process. The presidency takes the opportunity to commend the people and government of Indonesia on the generally peaceful and open manner in which this round has taken place and expresses confidence that these elections will contribute to a further deepening of the democratic process in Indonesia. Indonesia is an important strategic partner of the European Union. The European Union attaches great importance to a further expansion of its relations and co-operation with Indonesia".
