Luxembourg, 01/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - The European Investment Bank (EIB) has just lent SOFICO (Walloon company providing complementary infrastructure funding) EUR 110 million for roadwork repairs and the partial reconstruction of the E411 and E25 motorways linking Luxembourg and Brussels to Liège. This work is crucial given the rapidly deteriorating state of certain feeder roads (due to the "punch out" phenomenon), which creates a risk to road safety and a threat of unavoidable closure in five years if no action is taken. These motorway linkups are of crucial importance because there are no other alternatives to link up the two capitals (Brussels and Luxembourg) with the two "European motorway corridors" which facilitate freight between the ports of Amsterdam and Rotterdam. International traffic on this North South axis is considerable, with more than 25% heavy goods vehicles and 34,000 daily on certain parts of the motorways. The E411 and the E25 are part of the Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T) and are in this context eligible for EIB funding under "European Action for Growth", which allows for the bank to bring its financial support up from 50% to 70% of the total costs of the project. This funding is also important because it will allow for the speeding up of the project, will not eat into the Walloon regional budget beyond the costs of those currently forecast and is therefore indispensable for the general maintenance of the Walloon network.
