Education Ministers invited to define projects for creation of "Common Education Zone" in 2008

Guadalajara, 01/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - The EU/Latin America/Caribbean Summit reported on progress made since the first summit of this kind in on cooperation in Rio in 1999. In particular, the Summit agreed to extend the 2002-2004 action plan to create a "Common Education Zone" until 2008. Education ministers have been invited to hold another meeting this year to define common projects. The final declaration indicated that the parties will also "encourage the participation of universities and research into the "Erasmus Mondus" programme. The two parties committed to studying the possibility of extending the following programmes to Caribbean countries: Alban (grants) Alfa (education) Urb-al (networks between local authorities) Al-invest (investment) and @lis (information society). The declaration referred to the possible of development of satellite navigation cooperation. The Summit commended the ongoing feasibility studies designed to reduce the vulnerability of Latin American countries to natural disasters.
