Brussels, 03/05/2004 (Agence Europe) - During a meeting with Kastriot Islami, the Albanian Minister for Foreign Affairs, which took place in Brussels on Friday, Javier Solana, the High Representative of the EU for CFSP, stressed that the country should speed up reforms in three specific areas: the rule of law, the fight against corruption and organised crime. Mr Solana indicated that negotiations to conclude a stabilisation and association agreement between the EU and Albania could be speeded up, and possibly concluded by the end of the year, on the express condition that "concrete and swift" reforms are achieved in these three fields, explained a Council source. During this (short) meeting, Mr Solana also welcomed the role played by Albania in the region's stability. For his part, the Albanian Minister expressed optimism on his country's capacity to meet the European Union's demands, and assured Mr Solana that he would be able to present visible and concrete progress in the next few months.
