Brussels, 03/05/2004 (Agence Europe) - Due to a decision on Monday, the Commission is calling on Belgium, Spain, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Portugal to recover Euro 119.46 million of CAP expenditure which was misspent. France will have to pay back EUR 50.18 million of illegal aid, including 20.81 million for the absence of compensation aid in the banana sector and EUR 27.68 million for insufficient controls on arable farming area eligible for aid. EUR 21.82 million will be recovered from Italy (19.06 million for breaching a 2000 rule on rural development measures benefiting young farmers) and EUR 20.78 million from the United Kingdom (16.80 million for ineffective controls in the arable farming sector). This will involve the second recovery decisions for agricultural aid this year, following last February's (EUR 143.18 million, see EUROPE 15 February).
