EAPN insists on social inclusion

Brussels, 03/05/2004 (Agence Europe) - Sixty-eight million people are faced with poverty in the enlarged EU and would, if they were all brought together, be the Union's second most populated state. Their rights and realities, however, are largely ignored, if not denied. Noting this, just as ten new Member States join the EU, the European Anti-Poverty Network (EAPN) calls for adoption of a vision of enlargement based on real commitments rather than on beautiful May 1st speeches. Michaela Moser, who coordinates the EAPN strategic group on enlargement, affirms: "It is urgent for social policy strategies to be strengthened, mainly the European strategy for social inclusion and the national action plans for inclusion, while reforming economic and financial policies in a social perspective".
