Almunia confirms activation of excessive deficit mechanism for Netherlands and United Kingdom, with early warning for Italy - review of budgetary framework without affecting Stability Pact principles - in support of strengthening economic policy coordination

Brussels, 27/04/2004 (Agence Europe) - Joaquin Almunia, Pedro Solbes' successor as European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, confirmed on Tuesday during his hearing at the EP Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs that he will suggest, on Wednesday, activation of excessive deficit mechanisms for the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, as well as the early warning mechanism for deficit in Italy. He will propose - and this is "good news" - cancellation of the procedure...
