THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/constitution/federalists

08/03/2004 (Agence Europe) - Paolo Lorenzetti, Coordinator of the Committee for the European Federal State at the European Federalist Movement, comments in a press release on the interview by Joschka Fischer who, in an interview with the Berliner Zeitung, had stressed that the world is now dominated by "entities of continental scale such as Russia, China, India and the United States, whereas Europe does not have this strategic dimension" (see EUROPE of 2 March, p.6, and also today's EUROPE). Mr Lorenzetti told the German Foreign Minister that the countries he cites are not "entities" but "continental States, with all the powers incumbent upon a State", whereas the EU "as it is not a State, will continue to be impotent and unable to act". Mr Lorenzetti therefore urges for a federal State in Europe and, while recognising that this will hardly be possible in the medium term with 25 members, takes a stance for the creation of a "first federal core based on the founding fathers, which the others could gradually join (…) the only way to give life to a political subject of continental dimension to meet the new global challenges".
