19/02/2004 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is concerned at the possible repercussions on the EU of the dispute between Russia and Belarus, which led the Russian authorities to break off gas supplies to Belarus between Wednesday and Thursday, thus also cutting supplies to Poland and Germany. "We wrote to the Russian authorities to ask for explanations, and to find out what they intend to do to make sure this does not happen again", said Gilles Gantelet, spokesperson for Commissioner Loyola de Palacio, on Thursday. The conflict between Russia and Belarus should not lead Russia to fail to "respect its commitments to countries of the EU", he explained, adding that gas supplies to Europe are not currently at risk, as Poland has 30 days of reserves.
