Rapporteur on Mediterranean fishing in favour of rejection of Commission's proposal

Brussels, 18/02/2004 (Agence Europe) - Giorgio Lisi (Forza Italia), the European Parliament's rapporteur on the Commission's proposal on a regulation on fishing in the Mediterranean, has recommended that the plenary of 15 March rejects the proposal. In a discussion in committee on 17 February, the President of the parliamentary committee on fishing, the Scot Struan Stevenson, supported Mr Lisi, according to a press release which adds that Mr Stevenson said that a visit to Mediterranean fisheries was sufficient to understand the "economic and social drama fishermen are experiencing". Democratici di sinistra MEP Claudio Fava repeated that Commissioner Fischler's amendment was impossible to amend and must therefore be rejected. The press release shows the "incredulity" with which Ernesto Penas Lado, attending the meeting on behalf of the European Commission's Directorate General for Fisheries, reacted to the MEPs' resolve. This attitude, the press release added, led to a front "across the board, between political groups and with northern MEPs, from the United Kingdom to Germany" to reject Franz Fischler's proposal.
