Brussels, 18/02/2004 (Agence Europe) - The Italian Minister for Agriculture and Forests has filed with the European Commission a request for extra virgin "Cartoceto" olive oil to be registered as a protected designation of origin (PDO). The request is published in the Official Journal C41 of 17 February 2004. Carceto olive oil is produced in the province of Pesaro-Urbino (Marcia region) and more precisely in the communes of Cartoceto, Saltara, Serrungarina, Mombaroccio and part of the Fano territory. Its taste is "well balanced, fusing green fruity, sweet, bitter and pungent". The presence of olive trees on the Cartoceto territory is attested to in a series of documents dating back to the 13th century.
