Commission defines system to allow each GMO to be identified throughout food chain

Brussels, 16/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - At an initiative by Margot Wallström, the Commission has defined in a regulation adopted on its own authority the system that will allow food chain operators to identify genetically modified organisms present in food and feed produced on the basis of GMOs. The regulation will allow single identifiers to be developed and attributed to GMOs. Article 8 of the regulation on the traceability and labelling of GMOs in food and feed required such a system.
