For very first time, ECB expresses "concern" about euro's surge compared to dollar

Brussels, 13/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - While it is the subject of growing pressure from some governments to brake the euro's surge compared to the dollar, the European Central Bank (ECB), speaking through the voice of its president Jean-Claude Trichet, declared that, for the very first time, it was concerned about the situation. This declaration caused a slight fall in the European single currency almost immediately (under the $1.28 threshold). "We are concerned; we are not indifferent", Mr Trichet said on Monday during a press conference in Basel (Switzerland) where he spoke in his capacity of spokesman for the central bankers of the G10. "We believe that excessive volatility and violent movements are not to be welcomed", he warned. Last week, he had pointed out that the ECB did not appreciate the "excessive volatility" on exchange markets (EUROPE of 9 January, p.8). He had spoken of the impact that a strong euro would have on EU exports, while saying that the rise in global demand would allow Europe to face up to the euro's appreciation. He had also stressed the positive impact that the rise in the euro would have on inflation. (See also yesterday's EUROPE, p.11).
