Brussels, 13/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - The Committee of Permanent Representatives (Coreper) last Friday examined the Presidency's proposals of compromise concerning the second rail package and gave it a mandate to present the Council's position during the informal trilogue held on Tuesday in Strasbourg. A forthcoming trilogue could be held on 20 January while opening of conciliation procedure is foreseen for 27 January. We recall that the main points of divergence between the European Parliament and the Council mainly cover the date when international and national freight and passenger transport is opened up to competition, the modalities for introducing new national security measures after entry into force of the new proposals and the composition of the European Rail Agency (see EUROPE of 24 October).
