Brussels, 13/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - On the occasion of his meeting with Bertie Ahern, on 13 January in Dublin, the secretary general of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), John Monks, submitted to the President of the European Council the ETUC positions on the major European issues for the next six months. The document, in which ETUC encourages the Presidency to give a serious nudge in the direction of adopting a Constitution with a strong social dimension, will be forwarded to the Informal Social council of Galway (EUROPE will come back to this: see our bulletin of 7 January, p.9). John Monks said that the Irish Presidency is right to breathe fresh life into the Lisbon process but that they should not seek to import the American system of work into Europe. It is essential, he continued, to help people to find work and to improve the skills of workers, but workers must also be encouraged to work.
