Brussels, 17/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Ombudsman, Nikiforos Diamandouros has announced that he has opened an own-initiative inquiry into measures taken by the European Commission to ensure that disabled persons are not discriminated against in their dealings with the Institution. In a press release, the Ombudsman says that he wishes to ensure that the Commission's actions are compatible with its legal obligations and the commitments it has made. He calls upon the Commission to inform him of "the measures it has taken or intends to take to ensure that disabled persons are not subjected to discrimination as part of their relations with the Institution" and of the "time-table set for their adoption". Mr Diamandouros called upon the Commission to give him its opinion by 29 February 2004, and said that it would inform governmental and non-governmental organisations of his inquiry.
