Brussels, 28/11/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Summit between the EU and India will take place on Saturday in New Delhi at the highest level, despite the sudden illness of the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, confirmed the European Commission spokesperson. The Commission President, Romano Prodi, will lead the European delegation. Mr Prodi will be accompanied by the High Representative for CFSP, Javier Solana, by Margherita Boniver for the Presidency and by Commissioner Chris Patten, who was in Delhi this Friday. During opening of the Indian and European business summit Mr Patten noted his pleasure at being there despite the illness of Mr Berlusconi. He thanked his Indian hosts for their understanding and was delighted that despite everything most of the high-level meetings are still scheduled, including the political meetings tomorrow. The EU and India enjoy an important business partnership, he underlined, while welcoming the fact that they also share the same values over terrorism, democracy and fundamental rights. Moreover, Patten underlined that both recognise the important role that the United Nations must play. Also commenting on the development of the controversial situation in the Kashmir, Mr Patten stated that the EU is satisfied with the measures aiming to establish confidence, which have been set out by the Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and hopes that infiltrations along the line of control will cease.
