Commission proposes ratification and full transposition of Aarhus Convention within Community

Luxembourg, 27/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission on Monday presented the Environment Council with its brand new package of legislative proposals on the application within the Community of the International Aarhus Convention on public access to information, involvement in the decision-making process and access to justice for environmental issues. This package, which was adopted on Friday by written procedure, includes: - a proposed regulation for the application to European institutions and bodies of the Union (such as the European Environment Agency, the Patents Office, the Agency for medicinal products, etc) of the three pillars of the Convention; - a proposed Directive to make Member States apply the third pillar (access to justice), as the first two are the subject of Directives which have already been adopted; - a proposed Council decision on the ratification of the Convention, signed by the Commission and the Member States in June 1998 in Aarhus (Denmark).
