Commission regular reports show that all pending problems could be resolved before 1 May 2004

Brussels, 27/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - The 'regular reports' that the Commission will adopt on 5 November concerning the state of readiness of the ten acceding countries and the progress achieved in the three candidate countries proves that certain problems concerning the implementation of the acquis remain, but also that all these problems may be definitively resolved before 1 May 2004. On Monday the Commission spokesperson asserted that there will be no surprises in the reports. He added that the governments of the acceding countries know full well what has already been done and what remains to be done to prepare for accession. The key issue is to know whether what remains to be done to conform to Community legislation can be achieved within the given time, before 1 May 2004. The answer will be 'yes.' This will be the message that emerges from the reports, stated the spokesperson.
