Trichet is appointed as ECB Director

Brussels, 16/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - The governments of the euro zone countries decided on Thursday evening to officially appoint Jean-Claude Trichet as President of the European Central Bank (ECB). Mr Trichet is to replace Wim Duisenberg on 1 November for a term of eight years. Mr Trichet was received by the Heads of State and Government after his appointment had been confirmed. At the invitation of the Italian Presidency, the Economy and Finance Ministers of the EU Member States will pay tribute to Mr Duisenberg during an informal meeting on 29 October in Venice. On this occasion, they will welcome Mr Trichet to the post.
