23/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Paris, in its position on the draft EU/Mercosur free trade agreement, has said that "the two contracting parties should not be satisfied with an a minima agreement, and should look for ways to create a deeper partnership". The Chamber particularly stresses that "the EU chief negotiator (...) dwelt on the "grey zone" of non-tariff barriers and sanitary controls of foodstuffs", and that Brazilian President Lula da Silva estimates that 90% of European agricultural products have barriers to access to the Brazilian market. According to the press release, increased flexibility of procedures on the part of Brazil and Argentina must be obtained, and an "official definition of the formalities which are actually required". We must emphasis the removal of obstacles "which constitute a real minefield for exporters", stressed the Chamber of Commerce.
