Amman, 23/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - European Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy spoke before the World Economic Forum on Monday in Amman on the prospects of trade in the Middle East. He insisted on the need to apply the road map and added: "If the road map works, and peace returns, then Bob Zoellick and I must be the road construction workers". Trade is fundamental to restore peace and confidence, the Commissioner notes, adding: "the time will come relatively soon when all of us need to reflect more positively on what to do for Iraq in terms of trade". The EU and the United States should work together in this context, he insists, and, without wishing to predict the future, he considers it would seem "logical… in the longer term, to include Iraq in one of the region's trade liberalising, trade integrating initiatives such as the Euromed process".
