Luxembourg, 19/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - According to data released by Eurostat on 18 June, annual inflation in the Eurozone fell from 2.1% in April to 1.9% in May. A year earlier it stood at 1.8%. In May, the lowest rates were registered in Germany (0.6%), Belgium and Austria (both 0,9%). Compared with April 2003, annual inflation fell in twelve Member States, rose in two and remained unchanged in one. Compared with May 2002, the highest relative falls were recorded in Austria (from 1.7% to 0.9%), Germany (from 1.1% to 0.6%) and Finland (from 1.8% to 1.1%); the highest relative rises were recorded in Luxembourg (from 1.3% to 2.3%), the UK (from 0.8% to 1.2%) and France (from 1.5% to 1.8%). The lowest rates over the twelve months up to and including May 2003 were recorded in Germany (1.1%), Belgium (1.2%) and the UK (1.3%); and the highest in Ireland (4.6%), Portugal (3.9%) and Greece (3.7%). The EU's statistical office points out that annual inflation in the United States fell from 2.2 % in April 2003 to 2.1% in May, and fell from 0.7% to 0.4% in Switzerland over the same period.
