19/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - MEP Pietro Paolo Mennea (Italia dei Valori, Lista Di Pietro) has written to Giuliano Urbani, Italian Minister for cultural goods and activities, to ask him to promote, this Year of People with Disabilities, a "solid synergy between institutions and citizens", in order "to break down not just architectural barriers stopping the disabled from moving around freely, but also to demolish invisible barriers build by prejudice". These obstacles hinder the integration of people with disabilities, "who are unable to study, work and live freely in any Member State of the Union", said the EP Liberal Group member. In his letter, which was signed by other MEPs, Mr Mennea called upon the Minister to encourage all projects including films and television programmes, which draw society's attention to people with disabilities.
